Solar Photovoltaic System Comes Online at Hatfield Ice World in Colmar, PA

LIVINGSTON, N.J. (January 3, 2011)—A 400 kilowatt (kW) solar photovoltaic (PV) system recently came online at Hatfield Ice World, an ice skating facility located in Colmar, Pennsylvania. The system was designed by Jarmel Kizel Architects and Engineers, Inc., one of New Jersey’s most recognized architecture and engineering firms based in Livingston, along with its strategic partner Apollo Solar Partners, a turn-key solar solutions company. The process of designing and installing the system, from concept to completion, took just five short months.

“We are very excited to see this system come online and moreover to see our client reap the benefits of this new solar technology,” said David Margolin, president of Apollo Solar.

Jarmel Kizel designed the roof-mounted solar PV panel array to carry a name plate rating of 400 kW, which is estimated to generate 473,601 kilowatt hours (kW h) of power per year and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 355 tons per year. The 67,500-square-foot ice rink facility, which houses two regulation size ice rinks, is now generating power that will significantly reduce its dependence on purchasing it directly from the grid, and in-turn, reducing its electricity bills. The solar array also will provide Hatfield with additional revenue through the sale of solar attributes or Alternative Energy Certificates or AECs, as they are referred to in the State of Pennsylvania.

“This is an incredible time for our business. With the ice hockey season in full force, we will be using a lot more power—this is the perfect time to bring this solar PV system online,” said Rich Orlando, co-owner of Hatfield Ice World. “We are grateful to the Jarmel Kizel-Apollo Solar team for guiding us through the entire process and for making this project a complete success.”

Hatfield Ice World provides a safe and fun skating environment for its patrons, whether it be figure skaters, youth and adult hockey league teams, instructional teachers and students, and public skaters.

Matthew B. Jarmel, AIA, MBA, and principal with Jarmel Kizel, added, “This is a tremendous project for our Energy Solutions Studio. We are helping yet another client realize energy saving opportunities, save money on energy bills, and reduce energy consumption. We are glad to help them achieve these goals.” “Currently, we have several megawatts of solar PV systems under design, and are employing all of our architectural and engineering services for these assignments,” Jarmel added.

For this project, Apollo Solar set the design criteria, solar specifications and mounting designs for the appropriate sun angles for the solar PV arrays, while Jarmel Kizel’s Energy Solutions Studio performed structural analysis and design, as well as electrical design.

Jarmel Kizel’s Energy Solutions Studio brings together a talented group of architects, engineers and LEED APs, who work together to bring the highest-quality, most technologically advanced energy solutions to assist clients in meeting their green building and sustainable energy goals, while minimizing energy costs and reducing carbon footprints.
