JARMEL KIZEL’S ENERGY SOLUTIONS STUDIO AND APOLLO SOLAR PARTNERS JOIN FORCES TO DESIGN SOLAR PHOTOVOLTAIC SYSTEM FOR HATFIELD ICE WORLD IN COLMAR, PA

LIVINGSTON, N.J. (May 24, 2010)—Jarmel Kizel Architects and Engineers, Inc., one of New Jersey’s most recognized architecture and engineering firms based in Livingston, has joined forces with Apollo Solar Partners, a turn-key solar solutions company, to design a solar photovoltaic (PV) system for Hatfield Ice World, an ice skating facility located in Colmar, Pennsylvania.

“With so many businesses focused on reducing energy costs and energy efficiency, this design for the ice arena just makes perfect sense,” said David Margolin, president of Apollo Solar.

Designed by Jarmel Kizel and Apollo Solar, the solar PV panel array will be mounted on the roof of the 67,500-square-foot ice rink facility, which houses two regulation size ice rinks. The system design calls for a name plate rating of 400 kilowatts (KW), which is estimated to generate 473,601 kilowatt hours (kW h) of power per year and reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 355 tons per year.

Matthew B. Jarmel, AIA, MBA, and principal with Jarmel Kizel, added, “Our Energy Solutions Studio strives to create energy saving opportunities for our clients. This solar PV array will considerably reduce Hatfield Ice World’s energy bill and energy consumption, while at the same time providing them with additional revenue through Solar Renewable Energy Credits, or solar AECs. We are glad to help them achieve their energy savings goals.”

Apollo Solar sets the design criteria, solar specifications and mounting designs for the appropriate sun angles for the solar PV arrays. Jarmel Kizel’s Energy Solutions Studio performed structural analysis and design as well as electrical design.

Kenrich Mechanical, Inc., a company that supplies green products and provides solar installation services, is assisting Apollo Solar with the solar system installation at Hatfield Ice World.

“Our daily operation requires a significant amount of power to ensure a safe and fun skating environment for all of our patrons, whether it be our figure skaters, youth and adult hockey league teams, our instructional teachers and students or public skaters,” said Rich Orlando, co-owner of Hatfield Ice World. “With the ability to generate our own power through these new solar panels, we will not only reduce our carbon footprint in the environment, we also will cut our operating costs—we are grateful to the Jarmel Kizel and Apollo Solar teams for their ingenuity and creative designs,” added Ken Orlando, also a co-owner of the rink.

Jarmel Kizel’s Energy Solutions Studio brings together a talented group of architects, engineers and LEED APs, who work together to bring the highest-quality, most technologically advanced energy solutions to assist clients in meeting their green building and sustainable energy goals, while minimizing energy costs and reducing carbon footprints.

For this project, Jarmel Kizel’s Energy Solutions Studio was led by Matthew B. Jarmel, AIA, MBA, and mechanical, electrical and plumbing engineering services led by Vladimir Ayzenberg, director. Structural engineering was also required for this assignment to determine if the existing roof could handle the weight of the solar panels and the wind uplift angles. Jarmel Kizel’s Arthur F. Coston, PE, director, led the Structural Engineering Studio.
